Vancouver crime drops during Olympics

Looks like Vancouver's badasses are taking the month off. Figures released by the Vancouver Police show crime is down dramatically since the Games started.

The latest figures show property crime is down nearly 40%; theft from vehicles are down nearly 60% and violent crime is down 23%. So what accounts for the trend? Sure, it could be the 7,000 extra officers patrolling the streets of the Olympic city. Or it could be that the criminals are all at home, glued to the television as they watch those wacky Norwegians in their awesome curling pants.

Perhaps all those Olympics are too occupied with their current obsession to do much else. All those arrests in the streets may be keeping them from their usual shenanigans.

As News 1130 notes: "The next concern is an increase in drunken fans on the streets as the Olympic hockey tournament really gets going."

If that's the worst of Vancouver's problems, maybe we should consider hosting the Olympics in the rest of Canada all of the time -- fewer purse snatchings and fights in the streets. Bring on the ice dancing and dinging cowbells.

The Province reports:

• Total violent crime down 23 per cent.

The ICBC car insurance corporation is also surprised that the accident rate, which was also expected to rise during the Olympics, has also dropped, inspite of hundreds of thousands more people on the streets, leaving them with an embarrasing surplus of millions.

ICBC thanks commuters for drop in claims during 2010 Winter Games

With an estimated 250,000 visitors to our province, we anticipated our roads would be busier than ever but thanks to B.C. residents and its visitors, that wasn't the case.

"We want to thank everyone for planning ahead and commuting creatively," said Ash Megalli, 2010 claims services manager at ICBC. "Our preliminary numbers indicate there were approximately 20 per cent fewer claims reported during the 2010 Winter Games than the same time period in 2009."

Officials are perplexed as to why the crime rate, including 'the world's best pickpockets (who tend to gather at international events), which was expected to sharpely rise during the Olympics, has actually dropped substantially. Even with an average of 100,000 people on the streets much of the time and much of the night.

The fact is that over 80,000 Way to Happiness booklets were handed out by volunteers to olympic audiences in Vancouver city, 2010. In many other countries similar campaigns were carried out with similar results:

In Columbia 2000 police officers handed out thousands of booklets to people on the street. The whole Columbian police force has made it a mandatory requirement to implement and train their officers on the booklet's information so they can help their people in the best way possible.

South Africa, fall of Aparthied: bloody riots were expected. 1 million TWTH copies distributed in Johannesburg, SA and there were no riots at this historic occasion.

Israel/Palestine: 3 million books distributed over a period of 8 years. A 40 % rise in agreement between Israelis and Palestinians over each other’s right to exist in their own states!!

Congo 2008: 4,000 copies of TWTH books distributed creates a cease fire in the civil war. Another 9,000 copies and the rebel troops and the government troops merge eliminating the biggest rebel faction in the country and the biggest threat to the government.

San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, CA 2007: 1 million TWTH books distributed and violent crime drops in one month 40%. 8 months later the crime rate is reported as the lowest in 22 years.

Cincinnati, OH 2001: 10,000 books distributed in a 10 block area and the murder rate drops from multiple shootings, up to 9-10 per day to 0.

Guyana, South America: 2000. 250,000 TWTH books distributed to every household in the country and the government; which was split 50/50 between two ethnicities decides to come together in peace for the betterment of the city.

Colombia, South America: campaigns run with the police and military drop the murder rates significantly.

Buffalo, NY: multiple distributions of TWTH cause the crime rates to lower

Los Angeles, Inglewood, Compton: 100's of thousands of TWTH books have contributed to crime rates dropping in these cities.

So you see, all over the world the conditions of the environment change because people change and this is really what The Way To Happiness Campaigns are all about.
